EU Brings Uniform Charging Port To Smartphones

The European Parliament has approved the bill that envisages USB-C to be the standard charging port for electronic devices. By the end of 2024, all new smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headsets, portable video game consoles, speakers and keyboards will have USB-C charging ports. The European Parliament (EP) will make it mandatory to use USB-C charging ports in electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and cameras sold in member countries until the end of 2024.

At the EP General Assembly session held in Strasbourg, the draft law aiming to standardize different charging ports of various electronic devices such as USB-C, Micro USB and Lightning and to reduce electronic waste was discussed. MEPs approved the bill, which will bring uniform charging to smartphones, with 602 “yes” and 13 “no” votes. By law, USB-C will be the new standard charging port for portable electronics.ONE CHARGER WILL BE USED FOR ELECTRONIC DEVICES                           By the end of 2024, all new smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headsets, portable video game consoles, speakers and keyboards will have USB-C charging ports. Thus, a single charger can be used in various electronic devices. Consumers won’t have to buy cables and chargers for every new device. Existing cables and chargers can be used in various devices. The fast charging systems of the devices will also be harmonized.IN 2026 IT WILL ALSO COVER LAPTOPSThe regulation will expand to laptops in the spring of 2026. With this application, it is aimed to reduce electronic waste. After the law is officially approved by the European Council, it will enter into force by being published in the EU Official Journal.
