The saga of Hawaii’s Haiku Stairs continues, even as efforts to remove the iconic landmark are underway due to overtourism concerns. Nestled in a remote corner of eastern Oahu, this disused staircase, popularly known as the “Stairway to Heaven,” has captivated visitors with its allure, drawing attention from across social media platforms.
Originally constructed during World War II by the US Navy, the staircase has remained a tourist magnet despite its closure to the public since 1987. Recent events, however, have highlighted the challenges posed by the influx of visitors.
On April 23, authorities arrested five individuals for trespassing, while dozens received warnings and citations for unauthorized access and parking violations. The allure of the site, offering breathtaking views atop a 2,800-foot mountain, has drawn adventurers seeking the perfect Instagram moment.
Yet, the lack of official trails has led many to trespass through private property, exacerbated by online guides shared on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. The surge in tourism, coupled with incidents of misconduct, prompted Honolulu’s city council to vote for the staircase’s removal in 2021.
Despite warnings and an ongoing demolition effort, scores of hikers have flocked to the site, risking their safety amidst active construction. Honolulu authorities expressed dismay at the disregard for safety protocols, emphasizing the dangers posed by the demolition work.
The removal process, estimated to cost $2.5 million, involves dismantling sections of the staircase via helicopter, with one 700-foot segment being removed at a time. The fate of the stairs post-removal remains uncertain, though Kualoa Ranch has expressed interest in acquiring and preserving them as a local tourist attraction.
